Help Support Mack
Mack came to us last year to enter training as a therapy horse and he is just the most gentle big teddy bear of a horse – everybody loves him to bits. He had a bad summer and Autumn with a number of hoof abscesses and then in August he developed intermittent acute lameness on his right hind leg. It took three vets to figure out what was wrong and to finally discover that Mack had a floating bone fragment in his stifle that needed to be surgically removed. At a cost of $3,500!
Update: November 21st
Mack underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment from his stifle on November 15th and is currently recovering well.
The bone fragment was one of the largest that the surgeon had seen so it’s no wonder poor Mack was so uncomfortable! What you see in the x-ray was the edge view of the fragment – it was actually the size of a 20c piece.
Mack’s problems are primarily due to him being an ex-racehorse, started under saddle too early for his feet and musculoskeletal system to cope properly with.
His medical bills alone (not including his surgery) have already topped the $1,000 mark and we’re estimating that we’ll need to spend the same again over this rehab period. He’s also lost weight due to the stress of the injury and having to be confined, unable to be with his herd, and so is on lots of supplementary feed, hay and supplements that’s costing about $100 per week.
The wonderful and amazingly generous team at Decjuba stepped forward to pay for Mack’s operation AND to sponsor him for the next 12 months! We are so thrilled with their support. Decjuba have been long-term donors for many years for both this program and our Sunshine Swags program and we are so very grateful.
Decjuba’s sponsorship will cover all Mack’s usual costs (farrier, vet bill for annual vaccinations and dental check, feed costs etc.) but Mack’s costs will be higher than usual because he needs to be stabled and for the next couple of months so will be relying on hay and twice daily supplementary feeding until he is allowed back into a paddock and have access to grass. Our target for Mack’s care to cover follow-up medical bills and feed for the next few months is $1,000. Please help if you can. All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible.
Appeal Tally at 10am November 30th: $340 raised, $660 still needed.
